HK Adopts New Language Approach to Chinese Writing

A seminar on the teaching of effective and pleasurable Chinese writing was held Saturday morning at the City University of Hong Kong.

Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Education Department and University of Hong Kong and co-organized by Ming Pao, the seminar aimed at sharing with language teachers in primary schools and parents the teaching method on the "New Whole Language Approach to Chinese Writing."

Based on a research project conducted by Dr.Tse Shek-kam of the Department of Curriculum Studies, University of Hong Kong, the teaching method has been tried out and well received in schools participating in a pilot scheme.

Performance of the students has shown an advance both in their abilities and interest in Chinese writing.

At the seminar, Tse introduced to the participants the teaching method on learning to write pleasurably and effectively.

Teachers from four primary schools have also shared with the participants their successful experience in adopting the teaching method.
