Wang Nan Shuns Comparison with Deng Yaping

Two-time world singles champion Wang Nan refused to be drawn into comparison with table tennis legend Deng Yaping on Saturday.

"I think the fans who love table tennis in China will know who I am and those who don't might not," she said when asked about her opinion on Deng Yaping's popularity compared to hers.

Wang Nan, the world number one and dual Olympic gold medalist, beat her fellow Chinese and world number 14 Lin Ling 3-1 (14-21, 21-12, 12,12, 21-19) in the women's singles final at the 46th World Table Tennis Championships.

Wang Nan said that she was not pleased with her own play in the early stages of the tournament and would start to improve herself when she got home.

Lin, who overcame DPR Korean giant-killer Kim Yun Mi in the semifinal earlier, said she tried her best but after playing against non-Chinese players to get into the final, she was tired.

"I think we both played to our normal form. But I could not put in extra work that I needed to beat Wang Nan," she said.

Wang Nan paid due respect to Lin Ling.

"She had a very tough draw especially in the semifinal against the DPR Korean, but she has proven herself by reaching the final. I think she is an outstanding player."
