Vice-President Urges More Contributions from Hong Kong Youth

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao Friday urged the youth in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to make greater contributions to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, as well as to the nation's future.

Hu made the remark in a meeting here with a Hong Kong youth leaders delegation.

The vice-president welcomed the delegation to visit the mainland at a time when the country is marking the May 4th Movement, an anti-imperialist, anti-feudal, political and cultural movement in 1919.

Hu, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, encouraged the Hong Kong youth to expand all-round exchange with their counterparts on the mainland, in a bid to jointly create a splendid future for the entire Chinese nation.

The young people in the HKSAR are an important force for keeping long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, which also accords with the interests of all the people in the region, Hu said.

He said that it was significant for the Hong Kong youth delegation to visit here on the occasion when the May 4th Movement is marked.

Holding high the banner of patriotism, the young people with lofty ideals in the early 20th century had striven for prosperity and reunification of the nation, he said.

Since then China has realized national independence and the people's liberation and embarked on a road to build a strong and prosperous country, he said.

The return of Hong Kong and Macao to the motherland marks important steps towards complete reunification of the motherland, he said.

Since China's resumption of exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong nearly four years ago, the principles of "one country, two systems," administration of Hong Kong by Hong Kong people and a high-level of autonomy and the basic law have been fully implemented by the regional government, he said.

Despite difficulties Hong Kong is again witnessing economic growth, social stability and good living conditions of the people, Hu said.

This is the result of concerted efforts of six million Hong Kong compatriots under the SAR government led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, he said.

Practice has proved the correctness of Deng Xiaoping's great concept of "one country, two systems," he said. The central government is satisfied with the work of the HKSAR government, the vice-president said.

Liao Hui, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, and Zhou Qiang, first secretary of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) Central Committee, also attended the meeting.
