Macao Commemorates May 4 MovementOn the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the May 4 Movement, Macao held a myriad of activities encouraging young people to carry forward the fine tradition of the movement and contribute to China's future development. On May 4, 1919, students in Beijing took to the streets protesting against the then warlords-led government which planned to sign a humiliating international pact. The demonstration triggered widespread protests across the country. The movement also served as a campaign to fight against feudalism and promoted democracy and science. Students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University and Zhongshan University, have known more about the history and culture of Macao by viewing a photo exhibition introducing Macao and the Macao Museum. They were guests of the University of Macao. The young people from inland China and University of Macao exchanged views on cultural life and jointly held a symposium on how to expand the Chinese economy. "We will study the spirit of May 4 Movement, cultivate better views on culture and value, and create a bright future with new knowledge," said Michael Lou, president of Students' Union of University of Macao. Macao Youth Federation provided a special lecture for local young people to look back at the history of the Chinese nation and deepen their understanding of the construction of the motherland and China's Tenth Five-Year Plan (2001-2005). Authorities of the federation noted that the young people have the obligation to maintain and push forward social peace and progress. Macao will also hold concerts and Internet contests to mark the movement in the coming couple of days, sources said. Leading newspapers in Macao have carried articles to applaud the new thoughts and new culture brought by the May 4 movement.
