S. African President Calls for Speeding-Up of Mideast Peace EffortsSouth African President Thabo Mbeki said Thursday that peace efforts in the Middle East should be speeded up so as to stop the escalating violence on the Palestinian territories."The situation is very grave. It is necessary to break the log jam for a situation of just peace to be created," Mbeki said in Pretoria at a Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) meeting on Palestine. The meeting, convened by the NAM Committee on Palestine, will discuss Middle East peace efforts and how NAM could play a role in helping promote the peace process. Mbeki said that it is vital for the meeting of representatives of the 10 members of the NAM committee to find ways for Middle East peace efforts to be promoted. "All of us recognize that this is of critical importance. We have to find a way," he added. |
