Macao Schedules A-Ma Cultural Festival

Macao's tourism and consumption market will be given another shot in the arm when an A-Ma cultural and tourism festival is held from October 24 to 26.

Visitors will be presented with a myriad of activities, including a precession in front of the A-Ma Statue, a symposium on A-Ma culture and various art performances, as well as the opening and ritual ceremonies, organizers said at Thursday's press conference.

A-Ma, a native of Meizhou island in southeast China's Fujian Province, is now worshipped by more than 100 million people around the world. Fishermen will request the bless from the Goddess of A- Ma when they are on the sea. More than 4,000 A-Ma temples have been built for her pilgrims globally.

The origin of the A-Ma culture can be traced to Fujian Province, but it has profound influence, in ethnic, religious, historical, cultural and architectural terms, in Macao, said Joao M. Costa Antunes, director of the Macao Government Tourist Office.

He said that the tourism festival will enhance the people's understanding about the A-Ma culture and consolidate the links among A-Ma's followers and spur Macao's tourism business.

Construction of an A-Ma cultural village started Wednesday, in an area of 7,000 square meters at the Coloane island of Macao.

The A-Ma Cultural and Tourism Festival is organized by the Macao Government Tourist Office and the Cultural Institute, with support from Fujian Provincial Tourism Bureau.
