Somali Transitional Govt. Celebrates First Anniversary

A large celebration was held Wednesday in Mogadishu's main soccer stadium to mark the first anniversary of Somalia's new transitional government, which was founded at the Djibouti Peace Conference last year.

Over 50,000 people participated the gathering, in which some 1, 000 newly recruited government military men in jungle uniforms marched before the officials and delegations from Djibouti and Libya.

Addressing the rally, Somali President Abdiqasim Salad Hassan thanked the government and people of Djibouti for facilitating the peace conference last year, which led to the establishment of the interim government.

"The government has shouldered the task of completing the pacification and reconciliation of the country," he said, reiterating his commitment to solving the current political differences among military factions via peaceful means.
