Rural Officials Urged to Improve Work StyleVice-Premier Wen Jiabao has urged rural officials to improve their work style and working capacities to better serve the people.Wen made the remark a recent inspection tour to villages in the Taihang Mountains in north China on May 1-2. Wen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, inspected rural work in Tangxian County, an old revolutionary base in Hebei Province, and chatted with veteran soldiers, rural officials and farmers. Wen told rural officials to bear in mind the aim of serving the people wholeheartedly, care for farmers and their living, and work hard to tighten ties between the CPC and the broad masses of farmers. "Carefully implementing the Party's policies on rural areas is the key to success in this regard," he said. The vice-premier also urged rural officials to respect the democratic rights of farmers, safeguard their material benefits, help solve the problems they have met in production and daily living so as to win their trust and support. Farmers in Tangxian County where natural conditions are very poor still have many difficulties to overcome to improve their living conditions though drastic changes have taken place in the past half century. Wen asked rural officials to lead local farmers to develop economy by providing good services involving market information, production materials, science and technology to increase farmers' income. Work should be done to step up capital construction and develop education in rural areas, and to crack down on criminal activities according to law to maintain public order in the countryside, he said.
