Liberian Govt. Forces Make Gains in War Against Rebels

The Liberian Government Wednesday announced that its troops has "scored major successes" in fighting back rebel attacks in the northwestern Lofa County along its border with Guinea and Sierra Leone, reports reaching here from the country's capital Monrovia said.

"Due to security reasons it is not prudent to give the direct location of where government has scored the successes but I can assure you that we have scored a major success in the Lofa war," Liberia's Information Minister Reginald Goodrich was quoted as saying.

The government troops has recently recaptured the strategic town of Salayea and regained control of Zorzor, two key towns in northern Liberia which fell into the rebel hands at least twice before the recapture, said the report.

Earlier last month, the fighting renewed between the government and the rebel forces in the northern Lofa region and thereafter spread to the rebel-held northern towns of Kolahun, Vahun, Voinjama and Zorzor.

The fighting has displaced about 60,000 people, according the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees lately.
