HK's New FS Optimistic About Economic Restructuring

Antony Leung, financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), said here Wednesday that his first task is to help Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa restructure the Hong Kong economy, and provide opportunities for each and everybody in Hong Kong.

Speaking at the media session on his working day, the new financial secretary said Hong Kong is undergoing two very important paradigm shifts.

"The first one is from the industrial economy to the knowledge- based economy and this is actually affecting not just Hong Kong but indeed the rest of the world," Leung said.

"With this we are seeing a lot of challenges as well as opportunities for each and every sector and for every citizen in Hong Kong," he added.

"On the other hand," he said, "The other paradigm shift is that our economy is closely linked with that of the mainland and is merging with the mainland's economy fairly quickly."

These two paradigm shifts will cause a lot of changes to each and every sector, and indeed, to each and every citizen in Hong Kong, he pointed out.

Leung said he is optimistic that there will not be a very gloomy situation for Hong Kong.

"The entire world has changed from an industrial economy to a knowledge-based economy," he said. "We are merging very fast with the mainland economy. All of these pose a lot of opportunities as well as challenges to all of us."
