Economic Agenda Key Priority for New HK Administrative TeamChief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa said Wednesday the economic agenda was a key priority for the new administrative team.Administrative Secretary of the HKSAR Donald Tsang and Financial Secretary Antony Leung reported to Tung Wednesday morning on the first working day of assuming their new posts. Speaking after the meeting, the chief executive said he believed that, with the assistance of the two senior officials, the government "would be able to better serve the people of Hong Kong." Tung noted that the background of both secretaries and their experience in handling economic matters would be useful to his policy agenda to ensure the continued growth of the economy, the creation of more job opportunities and the success of our economic transformation. While the outlook in economies such as the United States and Japan remained somewhat uncertain, Tung noted that the mainland's economy had sustained very strong growth. China's accession to the World Trade Organization, its plan to develop the western region, and the prosperous development of the Pearl River Delta were all positive factors, he said. Tung pledged that government would continue to create a favorable environment and conditions for Hong Kong to benefit from these developments, improve the economy, increase employment opportunities and boost local consumption so that everybody would share the benefits of the economic recovery. "We will continue our efforts to improve the economy, education, environmental protection and living conditions as well as ensure the implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems'," he added. |
