Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spreading in Uruguay
Foot-and-mouth disease is spreading in Uruguay, where 90 cases of the disease have been detected, Uruguay's Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing Gonzalo Gonzale confirmed on Tuesday.
He called on livestock farmers to closely follow the situation and immediately report to veterinarians anything suspect they may discover.
As of Monday, foot-and-mouth disease had spread to eight provinces of the country, which are Soriano, Colonia, Rio Negro, Paysandu, Colonia, Flores, San Jose and Durazno.
In an effort to contain the epidemic, the Uruguayan government has decided to suspend slaughtering animals and start massive vaccination in the aforementioned regions.
However, cattle producers complain that vaccination hasn't arrived in time.
Uruguay suspended its meat exports last week due to foot-and- mouth disease.
