China's Major Cotton Producer Sets Up Sale Market

A cotton trade center was recently set up in Urumqi, the capital city of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China's major cotton producer.

The center has 90 trade seats and has already attracted 59 registered members. When linked with the cotton market in Beijing through the Internet, the center will be able to display the cotton sales market situation across the country.

At present, Xinjiang grows cotton on 930,000 hectares of farmland, and produces 1.5 million tons of cotton a year, accounting for one third of China's cotton output.

The autonomous region has adopted a series of policies to encourage cotton exports. According to a plan made by the local government, Xinjiang will become China's largest cotton exporter in about three years.

Since the end of last year, Xinjiang has attracted an increasing number of business people from central Asia, Europe and the United States, because of its lower price for and better quality of cotton.
