US Inspection Team Expected in China Tuesday to Check on Spy Plane

A team of US technicians en route to China to inspect a stranded American spy plane was expected to arrive on the South Chinese island of Hainan later Tuesday, the US embassy said.

The team, consisting of staff from Lockheed Martin, a contractor for the EP-3 surveillance craft, would arrive on a chartered commercial plane in Hainan's provincial capital of Haikou, an embassy spokesman said.

The US embassy was sending defense officials from Beijing to meet the technicians in Hainan, he said.

Haikou is located more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Lingshui air base where the EP-3 plane has been kept since its April 1 mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter jet.
