Shanghai Tries to Sort out Urban Transportation

A joint research program by the local car industrial group and GE is trying to provide answers as to how the city can settle the conflict between the rising demand for cars and the limited road space.

Shanghai, once known for its troubled transportation conditions, has improved a lot in the past few years with many key facilities like subways and highways built over the past few years.

This is the first time that Shanghai has ever conducted a systematic inspection and strategic research of its transportation system.

The project will refer to such indices as economic development trends and the city's general plan for infrastructure construction.

The project will end in 2002.

There are some 3 million commuters in Shanghai everyday, with 70 percent on foot or bike and the other 30 percent in public traffic services.
