Chinese All Through in Men's Singles

Chinese qualifier Zhan Jian upset reigning European champion Peter Karlsson of Sweden in four sets in the men's singles first round of the World Table Tennis Championships Tuesday in Osaka.

Zhan, ranked 167th in the world, beat world number 17 Karlsson 22-20, 6-21, 21-19, 21-17.

Frenchman Christophe Legout was the other seeded casualty in men's singles, losing in five sets to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro on Tuesday.

Chinese reigning Olympic champion Kong Linghui dropped a set in his 3-1 win over Czech qualifier Marek Klasek.

Defending world champion Liu Guoliang joined his best friend Kong in the second round, beating Hungarian Lehel Demeter 3-0.

Other Chinese Ma Lin, Liu Guozheng and Yan Sen also advanced.

European stars Jan-Ove Waldner, Jorgen Persson, Vladimir Samsonov, Zoran Primorac, Jean-Michel Saive and Jean-Philippe Gatien also reached the second round.
