US Pilot Held Responsible for Bombing Accident in Kuwait

A Kuwaiti-US investigation team has held David O. Zimmerman, pilot of a US Navy F-18 jet fighter, responsible for the deadly bombing accident in Kuwait last month.

Kuwaiti Defense Ministry spokesman Ahmad Al-Rahmani said here Monday that the joint team concluded that the pilot of another US plane and two US air traffic controllers should also bear some blame for the accident.

The accident happened when Zimmerman dropped a 500-pound bomb on military observers on the ground during a joint Kuwaiti-US close air support military exercise at Kuwait's Udairi Shooting Range on March 12.

Five US soldiers and a New Zealander were killed and seven others wounded during the tragic accident.

US defense officials said last Friday that the US military Central Command, which covers an area stretching from Pakistan to Egypt, will recommend that Zimmerman be disciplined for his part in the accident.

The two other American servicemen who helped guide the pilot could also face punishment, the officials added.
