Sudan to Try Ethiopian Hijackers on Its Territory
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismail Monday vowed to severely punish the Ethiopians who hijacked a plane to the Ethiopian territory last week.
"We did our best to secure the lives of passengers including the women and children, and we are going to put these terrorists, who had posed threat to Sudan and Ethiopia, in front of the Sudanese court," said Mustafa Osman Ismail here.
"These criminals would be sentenced to capital punishment," said the minister at a press conference jointly held by him and his host counterpart Seyoum Mesfin.
The Ethiopian civil aviation plane on a domestic flight, hijacked to Sudan last Thursday by five men and a woman, returned to Addis Ababa last Saturday.
All 51 passengers on board were set free Friday by the hijackers, who latter surrendered to the Sudanese authorities after being assured that they will not be sent back to Ethiopia.
Seyoum, on the same occasion, appreciated Sudanese efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis, saying that the criminals should be brought to justice and whether or not the hijackers should be extradited "is not the standing issue between the two governments. "
