Chinese Qualifier Upset Euro Champion in Men's Singles
Chinese qualifier Zhan Jian upset reigning European champion Peter Karlsson of Sweden in four sets in the men's singles first round of the World Table Tennis Championships Tuesday in Osaka.
Zhan, ranked 167th in the world, beat world number 17 Karlsson 22-20, 6-21, 21-19, 21-17.
Zhan plays an attacking game in the handshake style. Different from most handshakers, Zhan uses pimpled rubber for forehand and reversed rubber for backhand.
