PD Editorial on International Labor Day
People's Daily publishes an editorial Tuesday, the International Labor Day, extending greetings to the working population and calling on them to make new achievements in the 21st century.
The editorial also extends warm congratulations to the model workers given awards by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.
Model workers are outstanding representatives of the working people who have made great contributions to China's revolutionary cause, construction and reforms. They represent the fundamental interests of the general public. "The spirit of model workers should be greatly promoted throughout the country," the editorial stresses.
The editorial calls on Chinese workers to further support the reform and opening up, improve their moral, scientific and cultural levels, and shoulder new tasks to achieve the goals set for the Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005) and push forward China's socialist modernization drive.
The editorial says that the interests of workers should be well protected. Governments at all levels should attach great importance to employment issues and make efforts to improve the living conditions of workers.
The editorial highlights the significance of safe production, demanding that laws and regulations on safe production be implemented and supervision and administration on safe production be strengthened to guard against accidents and protect workers' lives and health and the state's property.
