Zambian President Re-elected as Party Leader

Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has been re-elected as party president at the on-going national convention of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), the party announced Monday afternoon.

At Zambia's central Kabwe town, the venue of the convention, MMD Electoral Commission Chairman Robert Simenza made the announcement after the voting ended at 17:00 p.m. (15:00 GMT).

Speaking after his re-election, President Chiluba pledged to continue playing an active role in the party but stressed that his position is purely a party one.

However, the president also said he will now consider the request from delegates asking him to contest the republican presidency in the late October general elections, emphasizing he will be cautious about the matter.

He urged party cadres to be united and rise above personal interests as the party prepares to go to the elections, cautioning delegates to be wary of other MMD members who have gone ''astray'' and want to coax other members to follow them.

Chiluba said since the MMD still enjoys a lot of support countrywide, party members should use this support to win the elections.
