Mubarak Meets with Solana on Mideast Situation

Mubarak Meets with Solana on Mideast Situation
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and EU Mideast special envoy Miguel Moratinos attended the meeting, MENA said, without elaborating.

Solana arrived in Cairo earlier in the day as part of his Mideast tour to help revive the flagging Mideast peace process.

Solana's arrival came one day after a visit to Egypt by Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who met and discussed with Mubarak the Mideast situation and an Egyptian-Jordanian peace plan.

The joint Arab peace plan calls on Israel and the Palestinians to end the seven months of violence, take confidence-building measures and resume peace talks on the basis of international resolutions and agreements reached between the two sides.

Before his arrival in Cairo, Solana visited the Palestinian self-rule areas. He will also visit Israel and Jordan.

During his stay in the Palestinian self-rule areas, Solana voiced support for the Egyptian-Jordanian plan, according to Palestinian officials.

More than 480 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed in the Israeli-Palestinian bloody clashes triggered last September by Israeli violation of an Islamic holy site in East Jerusalem.
