Millions of Ugandans Remain Illiterate

Uganda currently has a total of 5. 5 million illiterate people due to high school dropout rate especially at the level of lower primary, reported the country's Monitor newspaper on Monday.

"About 5.5 million adult Ugandans have no education," said Herbert Baryayebwe, commissioner in the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development, during a ceremony to award certificates at the conclusion of an adult literacy course Sunday.

However, he said Uganda is fortunate that many non-governmental organizations have been promoting the adult literacy programs to help the uneducated, adding literacy is a vital tool for fighting poverty in the country.
