Zambian Ruling Party's Constitution Amended

Delegates of Zambia's ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has amended the party's constitution, riding off the obstacle within the party for a possible third term for incumbent President Frederick Chiluba, Zambian newspapers reported Monday.

The amendment was passed late Sunday night at the party's national convention attended by some 1,200 delegates in Zambia's central town of Kabwe.

The newspaper said the delegates approved the amendment " unanimously by proclamation", before proceeding to elect the party 's new members of the National Executive Committee.

Political observers here said Chiluba would be nominated as the party's candidate for the nation's new president in the general elections set for late October this year.

MMD is also expected to come up with a proposal for amending the country's constitution, which also limits the president's rule to two terms. President Chiluba's second term of office will expire at the end of this year.
