African Troupes Meet in Beijing

Two African troupes from Uganda and Sudan staged performances in Beijing Monday evening.

The Uganda Endere Troupe and the Sudan National Troupe are here participating in the one and a half month long "Meet in Beijing Art Festival" sponsored by China's Ministry of Culture.

Founded in 1986, the Uganda Endere Troupe aims to promote the nation's self-esteem and self-confidence by presenting original art performances. The Uganda people believe that the "endere," the flute in their language, is able to play the most beautiful music in the world and their performances are all centered on that elegant instrument.

On the same stage was the Sudan National Troupe from northeast Africa. They performed aboriginal tribe dances, reflecting their wish for peace and luck as well as the bravery and power of their tribesmen.
