4,000-Year-Old Sacrificial Altar Found in Inner Mongolia
Ruins of sacrificial altar dating back to 4,000 years has been found in Aohan Banner ��county��, Chifeng City, northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The ruins are the largest of its kind in terms of size and numbers of sacrificial altars ever found in the north part of China, compared to similar ruins.
The ruins, located in the Xiajiadian lower stratum Culture site, Chengzi Mountain, cover an area of 130,000 square meters in an irregular shape in the plane. The major structure of the ruins is atop the peak of the mountain.
The northern, eastern and western sides of the ruins are surrounded by stone walls with a circumference of 1,310 meters.
There are five gates in the central area covering a total area 8,000 square meters. The top of the area has three larger sacrificial altars with a total of 200 altars in other areas, in different shapes and sizes.
The discovery shows that the Horqin grassland was a prosperous place 4,000 years ago and provides more detailed data for the study of the history and culture in the area.
