Paper Calls for Ban on Extravagance by OfficialsThe People's Daily published a commentary Sunday demanding a ban on extravagance in government activities.Citing some spending sprees on official tours and recreational activities, the commentary said these government-paid extravagant activities have severely marred the image of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government as well as the relations between the Party and government and ordinary people. The central leadership has made it a rule that no ceremonial activities should be conducted on visits by leading officials, but some people from localities and units have defied the regulation and practiced extravagance, the paper said. Those who have been engaged in such extravagant activities are ideologically loose or selfish, the paper commented. They are using public money to cheat or comfort leaders, it noted. The paper also criticized some leading officials at different levels who have tolerated the extravagance due to bureaucracy or personal friendship. It called for severe punishments for those have been involved in extravagant activities that have caused strong opposition from the public. |
