Overseas Chinese in Canada Denounce US Arms Sale to TaiwanThe Council for the Promotion of China's Reunification has issued a joint letter of appeal to strongly condemn the United States for its arms sale to Taiwan. The council represents overseas Chinese and Canadians of Chinese origin residing in four regions of Canada, that is, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. The letter states that after the US Government decided to sell a large amount of sophisticated weapons to Taiwan, the US President George W. Bush said that the US would do its utmost to help Taiwan defend itself. The act of the US violated its commitment made in the three US-China joint communiques, shored up the arrogance of the forces advocating Taiwan independence and escalated the tensions across the Taiwan Straits. The letter added that the Taiwan issue is an internal affair of China. The US Government should strictly adhere to the principle stipulated in the three US-China joint communiques, sincerely pursue the one-China policy and immediately reverse its decision to sell arms to Taiwan.
