U.S. Bars Pyongyang From Bank Meeting

Due to American opposition, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will not be allowed to send a delegation to the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank scheduled to be held in Honolulu from May 9 to May 11.

DPRK submitted an application to become an official member of the regional institution last August and hoped to attend the Honolulu meeting with observer status. But senior bank officials said DPRK participation had been blocked due to strong opposition from the United States. They added that the U.S. government had refused to issue entry visas to the DPRK delegation.

In the past, the Asian Development Bank has allowed countries to send observer delegations to its meetings if they had submitted applications for membership.
