180 Rwandan Hutu Refugees Repatriated From Eastern Congo
A total of 180 Rwandan Hutu refugees have been repatriated from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Zambian News Agency (ZANA) reported Sunday.
The report said the repatriated refugees, who are mostly women and children, came from forests in Karehe, Shabunda and Uvira in South Kivu Province of the DRC.
In April alone, 633 Hutu refugees returned home from the eastern DRC where they had been living for nearly seven years, according to ZANA.
To accelerate the repatriation, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has opened a transit office at Nyabibwe, 150 kilometers west of Bukavu, South Kivu Province. The refugees are then taken to Nyagatare transit center in Cyangugu Province, southwestern Rwanda, from where they are helped go to their villages of origin.
