Flyover Bridge Opens to Traffic

China's first bridge with road and railway traffic running on the same level was put into operation Saturday in Ningbo, this coastal city in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The bridge connects Ningbo's international Beilun Port with Daxie Island in the East China Sea. Its roadway is 28.8 meters wide, with a 7.2-meter wide unidirectional railway in the center and two 8.5-meter wide roadways on the railway's left and right, respectively.

Construction started in April 1997 at a cost of 450 million yuan (about 54 million US dollars).

The 4,500-m-long bridge makes transportation more convenient to and from the island, where the 30-sq km Daxie Development Zone is located and some 2,000 overseas-funded and domestic companies are operating.
