New York Times Cuts 47 More Jobs in Online Unit
The New York Times Co. is cutting 47 more jobs at its Internet division, closing the offices of Winetoday.com and Abuzz, an online information-swapping service.
The cuts, part of a broad job reduction program the company recently announced, were the second for New York Times Digital this year. The company cut 69 jobs there in January.
The online division also has lost additional jobs through attrition, transfers, as well as the sale of GolfDigest.com.
It has been left with about 250 employees after the latest cuts, spokeswoman Catherine Mathis said April 19. The company's annual report lists the division as having 450 employees as of the end of last year.
In addition, the company has taken a charge of $22.7 million related to Abuzz, whose acquisition in 1999 was valued at $30 million, according to its annual report.
New York Times Digital also includes NYTimes.com, the companion site for the company's flagship newspaper; Boston.com, a site associated with The Boston Globe; newyorktoday.com, a city guide site, and online licensing operations.
The offices for Winetoday.com in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be closed and its operations managed out of the company's New York offices. Likewise the Cambridge, Mass., offices of Abuzz will be closed and those operations handled out of Boston.com.
Earlier this month, the company announced plans for an unspecified number of job cuts through buyouts and layoffs throughout its businesses, which include several regional newspapers and eight network-affiliated television stations.
