International Diploma Symposium Opens in Chongqing

The Asian-Pacific Baccalaureate Symposium opened Saturday in Chongqing, this largest metropolis in western China.

This is the fifth annual session of the symposium held in China. More than 250 scholars from 40 universities and schools in Asia and the Pacific region are attending the symposium, which was organized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).

The IBO, headquartered in Geneva, is a non-governmental academic organ recognized by UNESCO. It was set up to cope with the growing number of students in families which move from one country to another.

China, with a population of 1.3 billion, has 300 million students studying at schools of various levels.

Liu Bin, president of the China Association for Educational Exchanges with Other Countries, said the symposium provides a good opportunity for educators in the region to compare notes on education. China should learn from the experience of other countries, and speed up educational reform and development.
