China Sets Up Petroleum Industry Association

China made further progress in its reform of the regulatory framework of the petroleum and chemical industry, as the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) was officially inaugurated Saturday.

The inauguration follows the disbandment in February of the State Administration of the Petroleum and Chemical Industries, which started operation in 1998.

According to Tan Zhuzhou, the CPCIA's chairman and the vice minister of the previous Ministry of the Chemical Industry, the CPCIA administers 41 membership associations which incorporate over 200 subsidiary members.

Tan said that the association will function as a service- oriented national organization with management functions focusing on the petroleum and chemical industries. With economic achievements as its top priority and industrial structure adjustment as its main purpose, the CPCIA will assist the Chinese government in advancing industrial operations, promoting technical advancement and perfecting the Chinese petroleum and chemical industries as a whole. In addition, the CPCIA will also ally the forces of the domestic industries and develop international cooperation.

Tan stressed that the CPCIA does not have any governmental functions as yet, but will undertake obligations entrusted by the State Economic and Trade Commission.
