New Road to Complete Coastal Highway NetworkThe coastal areas of China will be completely linked by highways with the completion of a new stretch of road in Fujian Province by the end of 2002.By that time, the highway network will stretch from Tongjiang in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, to Sanya, the most southern city in Hainan Province, which itself is China's most southern province. The Tongjiang-Sanya Highway will be 5.236 km long, and will link all coastal provinces. Fujian is known for its complicated geography, which poses enormous difficulties for highway construction. However, Fujian started to catch up with other provinces in highway building in the early 1990s, and has already completed four sections of its part of the Tongjiang-Sanya Highway. The other three sections will be completed by the end of 2002.
