Sexual Harassment Rife In S.Korea Civil Service

One in five female civil servants in South Korea was sexually harassed last year and half of them were verbally abused, according to survey results made public by the Ministry of Gender Equality.

The ministry, jointly with the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, surveyed 5,838 female bureaucrats working in 78 central and local government institutions in March. Some 19.7 percent said they had been sexually harassed, more often during dinner gatherings (40 percent) than in the office (33.3 percent). Some 47.2 percent of the harassment was verbal and 18.9 percent was physical.

The Gender Ministry plans to run regular education programs and to include sexual harassment among regulations on punishment of civil servants.
