Japanese Cabinet Resigns

The Japanese cabinet, led by embattled Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, resigned en masse on Thursday morning, paving the way for reformist Junichiro Koizumi to become the nation's new leader later in the day.

Koizumi, who was elected as the new president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Tuesday, is set to be selected as the new prime minister by the Diet (parliament) later in the day as the LDP-led coalition has a majority in the House of Representatives, which has the final say in selecting the premier.
