Related Laws, Developments in China
China now has extensive laws and regulations to protect intellectual property. There are, among them, the Trademark Law, the Patent Law, the Copyright Law, the Law against Unfair Competition, the Computer Software Protection Rules, the Regulations on the Protection of Intellectual Property by Customs, the Civil Law, the Contract Law and the Regulations Governing the Registration of Enterprises Names.
China has also entered into a number of international agreements relating to the protection of intellectual property rights: the Paris Convention on the Protection of Industrial Property, the Madrid Agreement on International Registration of Trademarks, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Universal Copyright Convention, the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Producers of Phonograms, and the Patent Co-operation Treaty.
China is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), an organization dedicated to promoting the use and protection of intellectual property.
With their headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the WIPO is one of 16 specialized agencies in the United Nations system of organizations. It administers 21 international treaties dealing with different aspects of intellectual property protection.
In 1996, the WIPO expanded its role and further demonstrated the importance of intellectual property rights in the management of globalized trade by entering into a co-operation agreement with the World Trade Organization.
