Bid Opens for Three Gorges Dam Project Equipment

Public bidding was invited Wednesday for equipment for the remaining section of the Three Gorges Dam Project.

The section will have 14 large generator units. The installation will begin May 31, 2003, and be completed by June 15 in 2006.

The bidding will be exclusively conducted among domestic enterprises, and five hydropower installation companies have already entered their bids.

Work began on the world's largest hydropower project, the Three Gorges Dam, near this city in central China's Hubei Province, in 1993. Its estimated investment is 50.09 billion yuan (about 6.04 billion U.S. dollars).

The project consists of a dam, 1,983 meters long by 185 meters high and 26 generating units with a combined capacity of 18.2 million kw.

On completion in 2009, the project will be able to generate 84.7 billion kwh of electricity annually.
