Vietnam, Thailand to Boost Bilateral Ties

Newly-elected Vietnamese Party leader Nong Duc Manh and visiting Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra affirmed the two countries' desire to constantly boost their friendship and cooperation, especially in the fields of agriculture, tourism, science and technology.

During meeting with Thaksin here Wednesday afternoon, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Nong Duc Manh briefed his guest about the Ninth National Congress of CPV, stressing that Vietnam would speed up the renewal process and implement the independent and open-door foreign policy.

Thaksin, arrived here on Wednesday morning for a two-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai, congratulated Manh on his election as General Secretary of CPV Central Committee and the success of the Ninth National Congress of CPV.

On the same day, Vietnam's Prime Minister Phan Van Khai held talks here with his Thai counterpart Thaksin Shinawatra.

Both Vietnamese and Thai Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction at the fine development of Vietnam-Thailand relations regarding all bilateral, regional and global scopes.

They discussed measures to further boost Vietnam-Thailand relations, including the deployment of a program to commemorate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries (August 6) and promotion of their bilateral cooperation in investment, trade, tourism and other sectors.

The two Prime Ministers also discussed concrete measures to broaden and strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as cooperation in the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) and other regional and international forums.

The two said they believed the current Vietnam visit by Thaksin Shinawatra would lift the Vietnam-Thailand friendship and multifaceted cooperation to a new height.

Vietnamese State President Tran Duc Luong also met with Thaksin here Wednesday afternoon.

Thaksin is scheduled to conclude his official visit to Vietnam on Thursday morning.
