Iran Denies Israeli Allegation on Military Buildup in Lebanon

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi here on Wednesday rejected as "sheer baseless" an allegation by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that Iran had set up a missile base in Lebanon.

Asefi was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying that Israel has repeatedly launched such allegations against Iran in an effort to cover up its aggressions from air and ground against Lebanon.

Asefi noted that what remains questionable is the Zionist (Israeli) regime's illegal identity and its deplorable expansionist policies against the interests of regional Muslim nations.

The spokesman pointed out that the time of such allegation is aimed at diverting the world's attention from the ongoing pro- Palestine Intifada (uprising) conference held in Tehran.

The Islamic republic is currently hosting a two-day international forum to support the Palestinian Intifada against Israeli occupation.

The conference is expected to provide financial and moral support for the Palestinians and put pressure on Israel to stop its aggressive policy against the Palestinians.

Echoing remarks made by Iranian leaders at the opening ceremony of the conference, Asefi stressed Iran's political and spiritual support for the struggles of the Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians to restore their rights and liberate their lands occupied by Israel.

Iran does not recognize Israel and has repeatedly called for the destruction of the Jewish state as the only solution to the conflict in the Middle East.
