Software Export Booming in BeijingBeijing has been ahead of other software producers in developing new hi-tech software exports in China. On top of its success in the past five successive years, it has by its software export trade chalked a new high in netting an export income of US$11.28 million in the first quarter of this year. So far, software industry has come as an important growth point and a dynamic force in boosting Beijing's economic growth.The average unit price of software exports of Beijing last year was US$31,228 about 3.2 times of China's average. An increased number of enterprises esp. joint ventures, have come to be involved in production and trade of software exports. The number of enterprises engaging in export of software had been rising from 40 in 1996 to over 70 last year, 80 percent of which are joint ventures. An increased number of software enjoys independent intellectual property now with an enhanced awareness of IP and growing ability for development. According to statistics from relevant departments, software copyright registration has shown a fast growth since 1997, hitting 5,000 sets in 1999 and 10,000 sets last year. Beijing has been place by its software industry in a position leading all others in China in production value, sales revenue, enterprise number, talent training and other main index during the "9th Five-year Plan" period. In last February, the Beijing Municipal Government promulgated relevant favorable policies in helping boost Beijing's software industry. It is learned that about half the number of high-level talents of computer software and 56 percent of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who represent the highest level of scientific research in China, are working in Beijing.
