Garbage Disposal in Beijing

A life rubbish column that represents the life rubbish rejected by a family of three people yearly is shown in China Science and Technology Museum of Beijing, April 24, 2001, which is a warning to visitors that resources saving is an urgent way. Beijing, capital of China, with a population of 13 million, produces an average of 8,000 tons of wastes daily. Its annual progressively increase of wastes is 1.5 percent, lower than 8 percent in 1980s. Nine garbage disposal plants have been set up in urban and rural areas of Beijing. Its garbage harmless disposal rate reached 81.5 percent by the end of year 2000. The city also starts to classify the wastes, such as used papers, plastics and cells for recycling utilization.
