China's Top University Hosts VC Forum

Tsinghua University, one of China's leading universities, hosted a forum on venture capital in the nation's capital Wednesday, as part of the activities to mark the 90th anniversary of its founding.

The forum, dubbed as "Tsinghua Venture Capital (VC) Forum 2001, " was co-sponsored by the university and some 20 local and overseas venture capital agencies.

Present at the meeting were Cheng Siwei, vice-chairman of China 's National People's Congress Standing Committee, and government officials and scholars as well as representatives of venture capital companies.

The forum set up four sub-forums on different topics of " Venture and Investment in China in the New Millennium," "Venture Capital and the Global New Economy," "Exploration and Practice of Venture Capital in China," and "Entrepreneurs' Views on Venture Capital."

The forum covered a wide range of issues, including China's government policies on VC, the theories and concepts on venture capital, analysis on the status of venture capital in China, and the prospects of China's VC market. A round table titled "How to Select VC Projects" was also held.

Venture capital has witnessed a boom in China over the past few years, according to some local experts.

Tsinghua University, a pioneer in China's educational reform, has made great efforts in technological innovation and start-up business investment.

As a forerunner among Chinese universities, Tsinghua sponsored the country's first "On-Campus Start-up Projects Competition," the first start-up business to commercialize the students' academic results, and first university-owned high-tech park.

He Jiankun, president of the university, addressed the forum, saying that Tsinghua wants to attract more venture capital in order to turn its academic achievements into industrial use.

So far, Tsinghua has established a VC research center and several well-known VC companies.
