Israel Reopens Rafah Border Crossing Between Gaza, Egypt

Israeli army on Tuesday reopened the border crossing of Rafah between the Gaza Strip and Egypt to allow a limited passage of travellers, Palestinian security sources said.

As part of the efforts to alleviate its closure on the Palestinian areas, the Israeli authorities decided to allow travellers to cross the Rafah crossing from 9:30 a.m. (0630 GMT) to 3:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) as of Tuesday.

Palestinian security sources said that the step was not enough and that Israel should completely lift its closure on the crossing.

About 100 people have reportedly crossed the border into Egypt on Tuesday in the wake of the reopening order.

Israel frequently closed the Rafah crossing during the seven- month-old Palestinian intifada, or uprising.

There were also reports that the Israeli forces Tuesday shelled Palestinian houses near Saladin gate at Rafah, injuring three Palestinians, including an old man who was seriously wounded.
