Qamdo Vegetable Market in Tibet Flourishing

Dozens of varieties of vegetables are now available on all farmers' markets in Qamdo Prefecture, the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The farmers in Qamdo in eastern Tibet have tried hard to expand vegetable growing. Last year alone, farmers in Qamdo County grew staple vegetables on more than 133 hectares, thus providing 7.25 million kilograms for the urban market.

The residents of Ruyi village, Qamdo County, energetically expanded vegetable growing. As a result, the average increased income of every family topped 4,000 yuan last year.

Qamdo has eliminated the short supply of vegetables. Its vegetables self-sufficiency rate hits 70 percent even in the slack season. The vegetables variety has risen to 55 from 10.

Some foreign vegetables varieties such as Japanese cauliflower and American celery have become available in Qamdo.
