Symposium on Government and E-Commerce Opens in East China

The International Symposium on Government and E-Commerce Development opened Monday in Ningbo, this port city in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The two-day symposium has attracted over 250 experts, officials and businessmen from both China and abroad. The organizer said that the symposium will focus on the role played by government in E-commerce, the latest trends in E-commerce and international cooperation in this field.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan sent a letter of congratulations to the symposium, saying that, as an important outcome of the new era fueled by knowledge, E-commerce has provided developing countries with opportunities as well as challenges.

Yang Boling, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that with the flourishing of the Internet, E-commerce has achieved rapid development around the world, and E-commerce is really taking off on a global basis.

The symposium is being co-hosted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, CAS, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhejiang University and the Ningbo Municipal Government.
