China to Intensify Water Transportation SafetyThe Ministry of Communications will strengthen its inspections and supervision of water transportation safety this year, according to a recent national conference for the purpose in Yantai, east China's Shandong Province.All passenger ships must undergo safety checks every two months, and shipping vessels that have run for more than 28 years should be put out of service, the conference required, according to Monday's China Daily report. The Salvage Bureau of the Ministry of Communications has introduced International Safety Management regulations, which will standardize safety management. By March this year, a total of 31 ships had received Safety Management Certificates, the newspaper said. National marine search and rescue operation management systems, and the safety awareness of seamen should be improved, according to the conference. This year, the Ministry of Communications has created five key areas to be managed separately - the Bohai Sea, the Qiongzhou Straits, the Zhoushan Island sea area, the southwestern mountainous rivers and the Yangtze River. |
