Taiwan Celebrities Oppose Lee Teng-hui's Visit to JapanCelebrities in Taiwan have voiced their strong opposition to Lee Teng-hui's visit to Japan to conduct political activities on the pretext of receiving medical treatment. Many people aired the view that Lee Teng-hui has ulterior motives in visiting Japan and his fundamental motivation is to peddle "Taiwan independence" and indulge in separatist activities in the world. His activities will cause an enormous harm to the development of Sino-Japanese relations and relations across the Taiwan Straits. Wang Jinping, a professor with Taiwan Shixing University, said that by visiting Japan, Lee Teng-hui attempts to peddle his "two Chinas theory" and "Taiwan independence" idea. So, his Japan visit is an out-and out political affair. Wang noted that after stepping down, Lee felt that his influence had disappeared and wanted to peddle his ideas in Japan. "Lee's naked performance on the stage only serves to lay bare his true face," he said. Wang said that the ghost of militarism is still wandering in Japan and that some people in Japan don't want to see China's peaceful unification. All Chinese must stand on guard on the collaboration between the forces advocating "Taiwan independence" and the right-wing forces in Japan, he said. Lee's Japan visit will bring serious consequences to Sino-Japanese relations and hurt the Taiwan people and across-Straits relations. The authorities must face the reality squarely, he warned, adding that otherwise they would lift a rock only to fall on their own feet. Geng Rongshui, secretary of the Changcheng Cultural and Educational Fund, noted that Lee Teng-hui has never regarded himself as a Chinese and belongs to the pro-Japan faction. Although he is out of office, he still wants to exert his influence on relations across the Taiwan Straits. In fact, he will attempt to advocate "Taiwan independence" in Japan. His Japan visit for medical treatment is nothing but a pretext. Zhang Linhui, a professor with Taiwan University, said that with the common struggle waged by the people across the Taiwan Straits, the "Taiwan independence" idea has been becoming increasingly unpopular in Taiwan. Lee Teng-hui's visit to Japan will give a shot in the arm to the overseas forces advocating "Taiwan independence". Zhang said, "Lee Tung-hui is a trouble-maker and his visit to Japan will do an enormous harm to the Sino-Japanese relations and across-Straits relations." |
