Tanker Oil Spills Into English Channel After Collision

About 110 tons of fuel have spilled into the English Channel after an oil tanker collided with a fishing boat near Dover on Monday, local coast guard said.

The accident, which happened a mile (1.6 kilometers) north of the coast at Dover, left a hole measuring six meters by two meters in the side of the Maltese-registered tanker Gudermes.

A Dover coast guard spokesman said: "The leak has now stopped and the pollution is dispersing. We will be monitoring the situation throughout the day."

The tanker was carrying 26,000 tons of oil from Dover to Africa when it hit the French fishing boat.

No one was hurt in the collision. The French vessel was undamaged and is now making its way home, the spokesman said.
